Fireflies

Now, many years after,
I still remember
watching car occupants
whizzing by
and marveling at the revelation
that other's lives
run, detached from mine;
that they'll wink in and out
like fireflies,
momentarily illuminating
small corners
of shared universe,
only to pan away
and vanish.

Like the Cold Light

Like the cold light
of twilight's fluttering firefly,
an autumn ember sputters,
but rarely ignites.
